PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Welcome to the website of the American Bridge Teachers’ Association!

The ABTA is a networking organization of bridge teachers, authors, and anyone interested in the future of bridge. Our aim is to help those who teach bridge to do it better, more effectively, more knowledgeably and more professionally throughout Canada, United States and Mexico.

As current President of the ABTA, I encourage you to explore our website. From learning about bridge teaching, advancing your own bridge skills or building your business the ABTA is a great place to start. This website offers insight into the association and offers members their own “members only” section where they can access podcasts and special presentations and other helpful teacher information.

Our members enjoy a Quarterly magazine which is designed to support ABTA members with articles that focus on topics relevant to bridge teachers from marketing and business development to teaching strategies and book reviews.

Networking opportunities include our annual convention where you can learn new skills, receive lesson plans from top teachers, hear expert players first hand on their thoughts and bridge treatments; and, receive advance notice and special discounts on new books. Each convention offers something new and exciting for teachers as well as planned social outings that enhance networking opportunities.

An ABTA membership offers the ability to enhance your resume and to qualify and apply for the ABTA Master Teacher designation, the highest recognition in the North American bridge teaching community.

The ABTA also offers various other awards including the Master Point Press Teacher of the Year Award, Apple Basket, and book and software awards.

If you are currently a member, welcome again! If you are not a member, but would like to be, please click here.

Enjoy and hope to see you soon!

OUR MISSION

The mission of ABTA is to help those who teach bridge to do it better, more effectively, more knowledgeably, and more professionally.

OUR VISION

To encourage the highest standards of conduct and ethics by its members; To promote and develop information for bridge teaching; and To carry out such other activities as are consistent with the purposes of the ABTA, and its Certificate of Incorporation.

HISTORY OF THE ABTA

In 1955, there was a dream of a bridge teachers’ association in America. On May 25, 1957, in response to a notice from George E. Coffin of Massachusetts, 14 bridge teachers from 8 states and one promoter assembled in New York City. After a stormy discussion, an independent non-profit corporation was formed and named the American Bridge Teachers’ Association. The promoter donated $150 ($1.00 for each charter member) to found a treasury in anticipation of subscriptions to a magazine he was going to publish. In 1961, ABTA severed all connection with the promoter and gave him back his $150.00. The purposes of the new organization were:
  1. To promote and protect the standards of bridge teaching and its practitioners.
  2. To establish a code of ethics and schedule of minimum fees in the profession, insofar as is practicable.
  3. To make known in the public and professional interest in any information in the bridge teaching profession.
